Carolina Beach - May 2011

Several weeks ago we took a brief trip to Carolina Beach, renting a little condo on the ocean. I did these two sketches from the porch/balcony in the front, the first in brown ink and watercolor, the second in Micron pen. We played in the waves, walked the beach, went out on the Kure Beach pier for a beautiful sunset, and did some wandering, shopping and eating in Wilmington, which is NC's port city. We also went to the Fort Fisher Aquarium. More sketches in later posts...

For me the beach is a place of intense light and negative spaces. Few places are visually more fractured looking than the dunes at the NC beaches. I love them, but have not attempted to draw them before.

wow ~~ beautiful place, beautiful work...i particularly love the spare quality of your drawing in ink... it looks exactly like you are describing it. and of course, the trees in your painting are tree-perfection, bent over just like they would be, beaten by the winds - i wondered why they were bent toward the sea?

can i say i do miss your watercolors without you saying you miss mine? your sketching is bringing you great dividends, i really should consider the figure drawing classes again but they so stressed me out with the time thing.
anyway, beautiful as always...hope you had a wonderful Dad dayx

Fractured. Negative spaces. I so enjoy the way you see things and share them. It's quite eye-opening for someone like me who sees the water, the sky, the sand as a composite rather than its parts.

I like how you've captured the dunes. The tangle of fences and plants are just the way I remember them from childhood vacations in Cape Cod.
